Liverton Pre-school Forest School

Tue 7 Jun 2011

The children at Liverton Pre-school have been in pirate mode this term. We have a few budding Buccaneers and scallywags in the making! The children have made pirate hats, treasure maps Jolly Rogers and even a pirate ship: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh Shiver me Timbers! At the end of the half term, Captain Blue Socks set the children a Pieces of Eight Challenge. They all took home a box to turn into a treasure Chest. When the children returned after the half term break they shared what they had created. Captain Blue Socks has promised to give a reward to the best-decorated one&that will be very difficult as they are all amazing! Lets hope he has enough medallions for all of the children!

The children have also enjoyed lots of outdoor play and the seeds we have planted are thriving and the strawberries are nearly ready to eat. Our visits to Parke and Stover were popular, and the children who stayed for the full day were very tired and rosy cheeked by home time! The community garden at Parke was a great experience and everyone made us feel very welcome. A big Thank You to them. We have lots of visits planned this half term, using local facilities.

Our overall focus for the second half of the Summer Term is Creative Development. We consider Liverton pre-school, as a place where childrens creativity is nurtured, not just for half a term but throughout their time with us. The children in the pre-school enjoy free flow play for an extended part of the session where their imagination and creativity thrives. We have had some wonderful experiences of childrens imagination and creativity taking hold of the session, leading it forward and taking the play experience in ways we could never have planned for! All areas of learning and development within the Early Years Foundation Stage are encompassed within these experiences.

I would like to encourage parents to visit http://www.slate.com/id/2288402 where Alison Gopnik has written an article on Why Preschool Shouldn't Be Like School She states: While learning from a teacher may help children get to a specific answer more quickly, it also makes them less likely to discover new information about a problem and to create a new and unexpected solution. Alison concludes: it's more important than ever to give children's remarkable, spontaneous learning abilities free rein. That means a rich, stable, and safe world, with affectionate and supportive grown-ups, and lots of opportunities for exploration and play.
