Manaton Midsummer Festival
Tue 3 May 2011
Manaton is
well worth a visit at any time but on 18th and 19th of
June it welcomes visitors of all ages to participate in our second Mid Summer
Festival, a week end of gentle outdoor summer pursuits centred on our parish
hall, picturesque village green, cricket pitch and church.
For walkers
there are guided theme walks, printed guides on local routes from a gentle
stroll to a full day`s hike. The Haytor Hoppa bus service allows added
flexibility and pubs in Haytor, Widecombe , North Bovey and Lustleigh are
within range.
For gardeners,
Manaton Gate garden will be open to visitors, a plant stall and a walk through
a number of our gardens with vistas of the surrounding countryside is planned.
There is a
competitive treasure hunt around the village with cryptic clues (and pictorial
clues for the young). Individual children and pub team`s prizes are to be won.
A special treasure hunt for those on horseback is new this year.
The cricket
club hosts an inter pub 20/20 cricket competition on the Saturday and a
traditional match on the Sunday, and the Club house will be the venue for a bar
and barbeque on Saturday evening.
The historic
church of St Winifred`s will be open for guided trips up the tower and a pet animal`s service at 5.30 on Sunday.
Throughout
the weekend a competitive photographic exhibition open to all and judged by
visitors vote is held in the Hall where refreshment, including cream teas, and
a visitor advice centre is open throughout, and where the week end concludes
with a reception and prize giving at 6.00 on Sunday.
