Devon Open Studios 7-22 September 2024
Fri 13 Sep 2024
Nearly 400 artists and makers are taking part in this year's county-wide visual arts event. There's a huge variety of high-quality art and craft on show, in some fascinating studios and spaces where you can talk to the artists and perhaps watch a demonstration or take part in a workshop. Yellow is the colour to look out for, on the free brochure available in libraries, tourist information centres and elsewhere, and on road signs pointing to the venues.
The brochure cover features local textile artist Susie Honnor, who is showing her work in Bovey Tracey with Rosie Sanders, known for her amazing giant-size flower paintings. Another Bovey artist, Bridget Arnold, makes beautiful lampshades, cushions and more, patterned with plants and sunlight in a process called cyanotype which creates a distinctive blue.
On the road from Bovey to Manaton are two lovely studios well worth a visit, where you can meet ceramicist Penny O'Brien, and printmaker Jenny Pery. I'm showing my Dartmoor-themed artwork with Manaton Makers at Ullacombe Farm on the road to Haytor. There you can also find silver jewellery by Janet Downes, weaving by Ann Fox, Sue Lewis' felt pictures, Philippa Lewis' ceramics, enamels by Karen Murrell, woodturning by John Rockey and Viv Styles' artist's prints and handmade books.
From Ullacombe you could take a scenic drive past Haytor to Holwell Studio to see sculpture by David Newman and Angela Holmes, and ceramics by Kate Lyons-Miller and Rebecca Roberts. I could go on: venues in the creative hotspots Chagford and Gidleigh are found in the West Devon section of the brochure, and there's lots more further afield. All the exhibitions and demonstrations are free; there are charges for some workshops. Full details are given in the brochure and website devonartistnetwork.co.uk Please note that not all venues are open every day; check the brochure or website.
