Tony Allen's column March/April issue

19 March 2013 : Helen Lines - Bovey Tracey
I found Tony Allen's comments in relation to the Bradley Bends planning application offensive and wonder what gives him the right to air these personal views so prominently? Despite the footnote that he writes "in a personal capacity and not on behalf of any particular group or organisation", it is highly likely that people reading The Cottage will take his views to represent those of the Town Council. Proper procedures were followed when the first Bradley Bends planning application was debated and turned down by Teignbridge District Council in January. Members of the Town Council, including the Mayor, voted against the proposed development in its own right, not because they had been pressurised by residents from "one side of town" over the interests of residents in Indio and Challabrook areas. The landowner is now exercising his democratic right to make a new, unchanged application for houses and industrial units at the Bradley Bends site, just as "some residents" are exercising theirs in continuing to oppose it. Tony Allen misses the point that there is very strong feeling by many Bovey residents about the extent of development in the town as a whole, especially as the Bradley Bends proposal sets a precedent for building on its rural fringes. Isn't the proper public debate about how the whole town will cope with the impact of over-development, not whether "one side" has won over the other?
